Norovirus Outbreak in Larimer County
1 year ago •source larimer.gov
Colorado, United States
Larimer County is experiencing an upsurge in Norovirus cases, with 18 outbreaks reported so far. The virus, often referred to as the stomach bug, has been predominantly affecting local schools. The outbreak was discovered due to an increase in reported cases of vomiting and diarrhea in schools across the county. The Norovirus, found in stool and vomit, is contracted when the virus enters the mouth. This typically occurs through the consumption of contaminated food or liquids, touching infected surfaces, or close contact with an infected individual. The virus is highly contagious and spreads easily from person to person mostly through the oral/fecal route.
Preventative measures include frequent hand washing with soap and water, as hand sanitizers are ineffective against the virus. Infected individuals are advised to stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms cease. Regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces with a bleach-based solution is also recommended. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.
