Norovirus Outbreak in Oceania Insignia Cruise Ship

2 months ago source cdc.gov business

1120 Caribbean Way, Miami, 33132 Florida, United States

In October 2025, an outbreak of norovirus was reported on the Oceania Cruises ship, Oceania Insignia, affecting 74 passengers and one crew member. The ship, which sailed from October 16 to October 27, 2025, had 637 passengers and 391 crew members onboard. The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on October 20, 2025.

The outbreak resulted in predominant symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting among those affected. The cruise line responded by implementing increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as part of their outbreak prevention and response plan. Stool specimens were collected from those experiencing gastrointestinal illness for testing, and ill passengers and crew were isolated to prevent further spread.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew reported symptoms to the onboard medical center, which allowed for quick detection of the gastrointestinal illness outbreak. This reporting is crucial as it enables timely intervention to limit the spread of illness.
