Holland America Line's cruise ship Rotterdam experienced a norovirus outbreak during its voyage from December 28, 2025, to January 9, 2026. The outbreak affected 81 passengers and 8 crew members, with predominant symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. The incident was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on January 8, 2026.The outbreak occurred on voyage number RN251228, with 3.1% of the 2,593 passengers and 0.8% of the 1,005 crew members reporting illness. In response, Holland America Line implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, collected stool specimens for testing, and isolated affected individuals. The cruise line also consulted with the VSP regarding sanitation and reporting protocols.
The problem was discovered through reports of gastrointestinal symptoms from passengers and crew to the ship's medical center. This reporting enabled quick detection and response to the outbreak, allowing for measures to limit the spread of the illness. The VSP is remotely monitoring the situation, reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
