Norovirus Outbreak in Rotterdam Holland America Line

1 year ago source cdc.gov business

815 Channelside Drive, Tampa, 33602 Florida, United States

Holland America Line's cruise ship, the Rotterdam, has experienced a norovirus outbreak affecting 107 passengers and 12 crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The outbreak occurred during a voyage from February 2 to 14, 2025.

The CDC reported that the predominant symptoms among the affected individuals were diarrhea and vomiting, consistent with norovirus infection. The ship, carrying 2,614 passengers and 969 crew members, reported the outbreak to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on February 7, 2025. The number of affected individuals represents 4.1% of the passengers and 1.2% of the crew.

The outbreak was discovered when passengers and crew members reported their symptoms to the medical center onboard. This early detection allowed for immediate steps to be taken to limit the spread of the illness. In response to the outbreak, Holland America Line increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, collected stool specimens for testing, isolated ill passengers and crew, and consulted with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures. The VSP is currently remotely monitoring the situation and reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
