Norovirus Outbreak in Seven Seas Explorer Cruise

7 months ago source cdc.gov business

West Camp Road, Whittier, 99693 Alaska, United States

In a recent outbreak on the luxury cruise ship, Seven Seas Explorer, nearly 25 guests and crew members have fallen ill with gastrointestinal symptoms. The Regent Seven Seas cruise, which took place from April 26 to May 14, 2025, has reported symptoms predominantly consisting of diarrhea and vomiting.

Detailed information about the outbreak reveals that out of the total number of passengers onboard, 22 out of 666 (3.0%) reported being ill during the voyage. Additionally, 2 out of 545 crew members (0.4%) also reported sickness. Despite these reports, the causative agent of the illness remains unknown. The predominant symptoms among the affected individuals were diarrhea and vomiting.

The problem was discovered when the cruise line reported the outbreak to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on May 14, 2025. In response to the outbreak, Regent Seven Seas and the crew aboard the ship took several actions. They collected stool specimens from those affected for testing, isolated ill passengers and crew, and consulted with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases. VSP remotely monitored the situation, including a review of the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures. However, due to the outbreak notification occurring after the voyage, samples were not available for testing to determine the causative agent.
