Virginia, United States
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) has reported an outbreak of suspected norovirus affecting hikers in Virginia. The outbreak has led to several cases of gastrointestinal illness between Buena Vista and Waynesboro, as well as in Shenandoah National Park. The affected area spans from NOBO mile 697.5 to 885.8.The outbreak was first noted on May 7, 2026, with hikers experiencing symptoms near the Virginia Triple Crown and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Subsequent reports on June 12 and June 15 indicated the spread of the illness to additional locations along the trail. Norovirus, a highly contagious virus, is suspected to be the cause, and hikers are advised to take precautions such as washing hands with soap and water, as hand sanitizers may not be effective.
The problem was discovered through reports from hikers experiencing symptoms consistent with norovirus, including stomach bug and gastrointestinal distress. These reports were submitted to the ATC, which has been monitoring the situation and advising hikers on preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
