Norovirus Outbreak Leads to Suspension of Hospital Ward Visits

1 year ago source bbc.com business

Strang Road, Braddan, IM4 4RJ Braddan, Isle of Man

In a recent development, Manx Care has suspended visits to two wards at Noble's Hospital due to a significant increase in norovirus cases. The highly contagious virus has affected an undisclosed number of patients, prompting the healthcare provider to take immediate action. The problem was discovered following an unusual increase in patients showing symptoms of the virus. Manx Care has since urged anyone displaying symptoms to isolate themselves from others for at least 48 hours after the symptoms subside. Relatives of patients have been encouraged to contact the ward during visiting hours for updates on their family members' conditions.

The outbreak was first identified on ward six, which was closed to visitors on Saturday. Three days later, ward eight was also suspended from receiving visitors until further notice. Norovirus, often referred to as the winter vomiting bug, is known for causing severe vomiting and diarrhea. It is particularly contagious, leading to rapid transmission among individuals in close contact.

The Isle of Man's public health directorate has issued guidance to slow down the transmission of winter illnesses and reduce pressures on the health service. Manx Care has assured us that an update will be provided as soon as the situation changes.
