Norovirus Outbreak linked to Navigator of the Seas Cruise

3 months ago source cdc.gov

100 Swinford Street, Los Angeles, 90731 California, United States

Royal Caribbean International's cruise ship, Navigator of the Seas, experienced a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during its July 4-11, 2025 voyage. The outbreak affected 134 passengers and 7 crew members, with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. The causative agent remains unknown, and the outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on July 11, 2025.

The outbreak occurred on voyage number 23491, which had 3,914 passengers and 1,266 crew members onboard. The illness affected 3.4% of passengers and 0.6% of the crew.

The problem was discovered through reports of illness from passengers and crew to the ship's medical center. These reports allowed for the quick detection of the outbreak, prompting immediate action to limit the spread of the illness. Stool samples from affected individuals are currently undergoing testing to identify the causative agent, with norovirus being a common suspect in such outbreaks.

Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.

In case you experience Norovirus symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care
