A norovirus outbreak on a P&O Arcadia cruise ship has resulted in the death of a 77-year-old British man, Alan Forster. The ship, which was traveling from Southampton to New York, reported nearly 100 passengers falling ill due to the virus. The outbreak occurred during the month-long voyage that took place from September 3 to October 3. Forster, a retired teacher from Paignton, Devon, began experiencing symptoms of the virus, including diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting, two weeks into the journey. Despite being confined to his cabin, his condition worsened, leading to suspected kidney failure and his subsequent death. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention later confirmed the outbreak of norovirus onboard the ship. The discovery of the outbreak was made after multiple passengers reported similar symptoms. The ship's medical team initially responded to individual cases, but as the number of sick passengers increased, it became clear that an outbreak was underway. Despite the efforts of the medical team, Forster's condition deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization in Saint John, Canada, when the ship docked there. Unfortunately, his symptoms had worsened, and his kidneys began to fail, resulting in his death.
This incident highlights the potential risks associated with norovirus outbreaks in enclosed environments such as cruise ships. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the outbreak and to implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.
In case you experience Norovirus symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care
