A suspected norovirus outbreak has led to the closure of Roberts Elementary School in Medford, Massachusetts, after over 130 students reported illnesses. The outbreak has resulted in the school being shut down temporarily to prevent further spread of the virus. The outbreak was identified after a significant number of students began exhibiting symptoms consistent with norovirus, including vomiting and diarrhea. On Wednesday, school administrators noted that more than 130 students were absent, and additional students and staff reported feeling unwell while at school. In response, the school decided to close on Thursday, December 11, to conduct a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises. The Medford Board of Health is also investigating the school cafeteria equipment to ensure there are no other potential sources of contamination.
The problem was discovered when the school noticed an unusually high number of student absences and reports of gastrointestinal symptoms among those present. School officials promptly communicated with families, advising them of the situation and the steps being taken to address it. The Medford Board of Health is working closely with the school to manage the outbreak and prevent further cases.
