Norovirus Suspected in Edgartown Outbreak Linked to Private Events

7 months ago source edgartown-ma.us

Edgartown, Massachusetts, United States

Health officials in Edgartown, Massachusetts are investigating a suspected Norovirus outbreak following multiple cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to recent private events. At least two venues the Edgartown Reading Room and the Edgartown Yacht Club have reported sick staff members.

According to the Edgartown Board of Health, several individuals developed symptoms consistent with Norovirus, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping, after attending gatherings on Chappaquiddick and at the Reading Room over the weekend. While no cases have been confirmed through laboratory testing, precautionary steps have been taken to contain the potential outbreak. Both affected establishments voluntarily closed on July 22 for a minimum of 48 hours to conduct deep cleaning and sanitation. Staff who experienced symptoms have been instructed to remain at home for at least 72 hours after recovery.

The potential outbreak was identified after multiple reports of illness were submitted to the Board of Health. In response, the Board coordinated with restaurant operators and issued an advisory to all local food establishments to reinforce safe food handling practices. The investigation is ongoing, and the situation is being monitored in coordination with local health officials.
