Outbreak in Silver Ray Cruise Ship linked to Gastrointestinal Illness

11 months ago source cdc.gov business

1850 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, 33316 Florida, United States

In a recent outbreak aboard the luxury cruise ship Silver Ray, operated by Silversea Cruises, over 40 people have fallen ill with gastrointestinal symptoms. The outbreak occurred during the voyage from January 4 to January 20, 2025. Detailed reports indicate that 45 out of 681 passengers and 5 out of 532 crew members reported symptoms of illness, predominantly diarrhea and abdominal cramps. The causative agent behind the outbreak remains unknown. The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on January 10, 2025.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew members reported their symptoms to the onboard medical center. In response to the outbreak, Silversea Cruises has increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as per its outbreak prevention and response plan. Ill passengers and crew have been isolated, and the cruise line is consulting with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases. The VSP is remotely monitoring the situation, including a review of the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
