Salmonella Enteritidis Outbreak in Denmark

1 day ago source ssi.dk

Denmark

An outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis sequence type 11 has been reported in Denmark, with 14 individuals falling ill since November 19, 2025. The Statens Serum Institut, along with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the National Food Institute DTU, is investigating the outbreak. The source of the infection remains unidentified.

The outbreak has affected residents across several regions, with the highest number of cases reported in the capital, where seven individuals have been infected. Central Jutland has reported four cases, while Southern Denmark has three. The affected individuals range in age from 2 to 84 years, with a median age of 69. The group includes four women and ten men.

The outbreak was identified through whole-genome sequencing conducted by the Statens Serum Institut, which revealed that the bacteria isolated from the patients are closely genetically related, all belonging to sequence type 11. Patient interviews are ongoing to trace the source of the infection. The Central Outbreak Group, comprising the Statens Serum Institut, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and the National Food Institute at DTU, is coordinating the investigation.
