Salmonella Outbreak linked to Unidentified Source in Austria

1 month ago source ages.at

Austria

Since August 2025, a rare strain of Salmonella has sickened 49 individuals across all federal states of Austria, with 15 requiring hospitalization. The Ministry of Health has tasked AGES with investigating this outbreak, which has also been reported in several other European countries.

The outbreak involves Salmonella Kenya, a strain uncommon in Europe. Despite extensive investigations, the source of the outbreak remains unidentified. The Ministry of Health, AGES, and provincial authorities are collaborating closely to trace the origin and contain the spread of this food-borne illness. The situation has raised concerns due to the pathogen's rarity and the widespread nature of the cases.

The outbreak was initially detected through routine health surveillance systems, which identified an unusual increase in Salmonella cases. Subsequent laboratory testing confirmed the presence of the rare Salmonella Kenya strain. Health authorities are continuing their efforts to trace the contamination source and prevent further infections.
