Salmonella Strathcona Outbreak in Denmark

3 weeks ago source ssi.dk

Denmark

An outbreak of Salmonella Strathcona has been reported in Denmark, with 26 individuals falling ill since early November 2025. The Statens Serum Institut, in collaboration with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the National Food Institute DTU, is investigating the outbreak, which has affected people primarily west of the Great Belt.

The outbreak has seen 17 women and 9 men, aged between 8 and 87, infected with the same strain of Salmonella Strathcona. The majority of cases are concentrated in Southern Denmark and Central Jutland, with smaller numbers in North Jutland and Zealand. The Central Outbreak Group is conducting whole-genome sequencing of patient isolates and interviews to trace the source of the infection. This strain, sequence type 2559, has been linked to previous outbreaks in Denmark and other European countries.

The outbreak was identified through routine surveillance by the Statens Serum Institut, which registered the cases and initiated an investigation. Whole-genome sequencing revealed the genetic similarity among the isolates, prompting further analysis to determine the infection source. Historical data suggest a possible link to tomatoes, although the current source remains unidentified.
