1 year ago •source washoelife.washoecounty.gov
United States
Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) has identified an outbreak of Shigellosis, with 14 confirmed cases and nine hospitalizations reported in Reno and Sparks, Nevada in the United States. The outbreak, which began in late October, has primarily affected individuals experiencing homelessness, with over half of the reported cases coming from this population. The actual number of cases is believed to be significantly higher than reported. NNPH is actively working with agencies serving these populations to mitigate the outbreak and educate individuals about the risks of infection and prevention measures. The outbreak was discovered following an unusual surge in hospitalizations and new cases of Shigellosis. NNPH, in collaboration with the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory, conducted an epidemiologic investigation that led to the identification of the outbreak. Shigellosis is an intestinal infection that can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. It is spread through contact with contaminated food or water, or through contact with an infected person.
NNPH is urging the public to practice good hygiene, avoid preparing food for others if they suspect they have Shigellosis, refrain from sexual activity during illness and recovery, and stay home from work or school until cleared by public health authorities. Those experiencing symptoms are encouraged to seek medical care.
In case you are experiencing Shigellosis symptoms such as diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, stomach cramps, or nausea, it is important to report it. Reporting helps detect & resolve outbreaks early, prevents others from being affected, and improves public health surveillance. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical care.
