Shigellosis outbreak in Yakima County, WA

1 year ago source nbcrightnow.com

Outbreak

Washington, United States

The Yakima Health District (YHD) has revealed a significant outbreak of a bacterial condition, Shigella, in Yakima County. As per the recent data, the illness has affected 72 individuals from January 1, 2023, to October 16, 2023.

The outbreak is of notable concern due to a substantial increase in recorded cases compared to the previous year. The YHD report indicates that only 10 instances of Shigella were reported during the same period last year. This bacterial pathogen, Shigella, is notorious for its high contagion rates, spreading rapidly between humans through contaminated surfaces or personal contact with an already infected individual.

According to the CDC, you can reduce the risk of infection with these tips:

- Wash hands before sex, food prep, and after using the bathroom.
- Dispose of diapers promptly and clean spills immediately.
- Avoid swallowing pond or pool water.
- Follow safe food and water practices when traveling abroad.
- If diagnosed with shigellosis, refrain from sex for at least two weeks after diarrhea stops to prevent its spread.

In case you are experiencing Shigellosis symptoms such as vomiting, Diarrhea that can be bloody or prolonged, stomach Pain, Fever, and urge to pass stool (poop) but bowels are empty, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
