Shigellosis Outbreak likely linked to a Conference in Hotel Venue ine in Downtown Los Angeles

1 year ago source acphd-web-media.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com

Outbreak

Los Angeles, California, United States

A Shigellosis outbreak is being investigated by Alameda County Public Health Department in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), which may be associated with a conference held at a hotel venue in downtown Los Angeles. The event, from August 21-24, 2023, saw over 300 attendees and has since resulted in 6 confirmed cases.

The four-day union delegate conference resulted in 6 reported cases of shigellosis as of August 31, 2023, originating from 4 different local health jurisdictions in California. At least 3 of these cases were confirmed to be Shigella by PCR, with additional subtyping pending. It's been reported that all of the infected individuals attended the event and the known illness onset date has been identified as August 25th of these cases, at least 2 have required hospitalization. As of September 1, 2023, Alameda County is reporting 3 shigellosis cases to CDPH, all of whom attended this event.

Public health officials continue to manage and investigate the outbreak, informing and liaising with event attendees and local health authorities to manage the situation.

In case you are experiencing Shigellosis symptoms such as vomiting, Diarrhea that can be bloody or prolonged, stomach Pain, Fever, and urge to pass stool (poop) but bowels are empty, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
