Star Princess Norovirus Outbreak March 2026

3 days ago source cdc.gov

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States

Princess Cruises' Star Princess has experienced a norovirus outbreak, affecting at least 153 individuals during its March 7-14, 2026 voyage. The outbreak, reported on March 11, 2026, involved 104 passengers and 49 crew members, with symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting.

The outbreak occurred on voyage number 4611 of the Star Princess, which had 4,307 passengers and 1,561 crew members on board. The Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) was notified on March 11, 2026, after the onset of symptoms among those affected. The illness rate was 2.4% among passengers and 3.1% among crew members. Norovirus, a highly contagious virus, was identified as the causative agent.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew began reporting symptoms consistent with norovirus. In response, Princess Cruises implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as part of their outbreak prevention and response plan. Stool specimens were collected for testing, and ill individuals were isolated.

The VSP is conducting a field response to perform an environmental assessment and outbreak investigation to help control the situation.
