An adult has died in a Salmonella outbreak in Germany linked to a nut nougat spread. The outbreak involves 40 patients, primarily children and adolescents, in eastern Germany. The Robert Koch Institute is investigating the outbreak of the rare Salmonella Bochum strain, which has been causing illnesses since September 2025.The outbreak has affected 30 children aged 2 to 15, with the remaining 10 patients being adults aged 21 to 82. Nine individuals required hospitalization, and one person over 60 years old has died. The outbreak has also been linked to cases in Austria and France, with Sachsen reporting the highest number of cases in Germany.
The problem was discovered through interviews and a case control study, which identified a nut nougat spread as the infection source. Internal checks by the manufacturer detected Salmonella in certain batches, leading to a recall on April 9. The recall includes Nudossi Haselnuss-Nougat-Crème 300-gram products with expiration dates from August 1 to September 30, 2026. Further investigations into the manufacturing process and supply chains are ongoing.
