Salmonella Stanley Outbreak across Europe

Austria
A Europe-wide outbreak of Salmonella has been reported, affecting 62 individuals across several countries between January and April 2026. The specific strain involved is Salmonella Stanley ST2045. Austria is among the affected nations, with six reported cases. Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, and the Netherlands are among the other countries affected. The outbreak has prompted an investigation by the Austrian Ministry of Health and AGES.The outbreak is characterized by a close genetic cluster of cases across multiple countries, suggesting a common source. The temporal distribution of the cases further supports this theory. Notably, children and young adults are disproportionately affected, hinting at possible dietary habits linked to the outbreak. Despite these findings, the exact source of the infection remains unidentified.
The issue was discovered through collaborative efforts involving AGES, the Ministry of Health, provincial authorities, and European agencies. The investigation aims to pinpoint the source and prevent further cases. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has also been involved, providing updates and monitoring the situation closely.
