Severe GI Illness Outbreak - Applebee's, Newton New Jersey
3 weeks ago •reported by user-fnxjv556 • business
6 North Park Drive, Newton, 07860 New Jersey, United States
Re: Applebee's, Newton, NJ (Sussex County)Party of eight dined on 1/29/2026 - five had the worst case of gastrointestinal issues (food poisoning) I've ever seen. Diarrhea, projectile vomiting, excruciating cramping, nausea, loss of appetite since the contamination and continued stomach discomfort. The following patrons were affected: An 84yo female, 66yo male, 35yo male, 34yo female and 9yo male.
No hospitalizations, but four out of five were very close to doing so except the 9yo male.
This is unacceptable. Uncleanliness and virus infected employees most likely to have caused this.
Applebees, you have got to vet your employees and be extremely proactive in the day-day operations of your establishment.
-Cleanliness
-Disinfect
-Sick employees
-Etc
In fact, this place needs a complete overhaul - Period. Full stop.
Will not be dining here again until the nasty carpet is replaced or removed, kitchen and bathrooms revamped, bar and dining room renovated.
Will be reporting this unfortunate experience to Department of Health.
Thank you. | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Stomach Pain, Cramps, Loss of Appetite, Gas

For this to be food poisoning, you would have had to have eaten the same thing.

Hi, thank you for your comment. Foodborne illness does not always require everyone to eat the exact same item. Illness can occur due to cross-contamination, shared ingredients, improper food handling, contaminated surfaces, or an infected food worker. In those cases, different menu items can still lead to similar symptoms among multiple diners. Wish you a good day! Best, Iwaspoisoned Support.
Ate there on Friday January 30 and spent my weekend miserable. I though I was going to die from the constant vomiting and diarrhea. The headache, the body ache and sweats. I didn’t know that so many ppl got sick from the same place till the Sussex health department said something.
