Public Health investigated an outbreak of norovirus associated with Sammamish Cafe & Spirits. Identified multiple sick restaurant staff who reported symptoms consistent with norovirus. Norovirus outbreak linked to the Sammamish Cafe & Spirits, located at 22850 NE 8th St, Sammamish, WA 98074, USA. To date, six cases have been reported. No hospitalizations or deaths have been reported. Five people reported becoming sick after consuming food and drinks at the restaurant on the aforementioned dates. An additional person, who did not eat at the restaurant but lives with one of the sick individuals, also developed symptoms.
The norovirus can spread through contaminated food items, environmental surfaces, and from person to person. Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.
The outbreak occurred between July 2, 2024, and July 3, 2024, with the onset of illness ranging from July 4, 2024, to July 6, 2024. The restaurant was closed on July 12, 2024, for thorough cleaning and disinfection. Upon inspection on July 15, 2024, the restaurant was allowed to reopen after confirming the cleaning and disinfection process was adequately performed. The restaurant staff was educated about preventing the spread of norovirus, including proper handwashing and preventing bare hand contact with ready-to-eat foods.
