Telegraph Herald reported that several Maquoketa children developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is a serious complication that can be caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, also known as STEC. These children are receiving care at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.Local health officials have not yet identified the source, but they are working to determine what might have caused the outbreak.
It is recommended to consult with a primary care physician if you are experience symptoms beyond what is expected of stomach flu or food poisoning.
