Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak on Coral Princess Cruise Ship

9 months ago source cdc.gov business

27 The Embarcadero, San Francisco, 94111 California, United States

Princess Cruises' Coral Princess has reported a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during its voyage from January 20 to February 5, 2025. The causative agent has been identified as norovirus. A total of 59 passengers and 12 crew members have fallen ill, exhibiting symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.

The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on January 27, 2025. Of the 1,894 passengers on board, 3.1% reported being ill. Among the crew of 885, 1.4% reported sickness. The voyage, numbered 6503, has been marked by the predominant symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, characteristic of the norovirus.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew reported their symptoms to the medical center onboard. This early detection allowed for immediate steps to be taken to limit the spread of the illness. In response to the outbreak, Princess Cruises and the crew aboard the ship have increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan. They have also collected stool specimens from gastrointestinal illness cases for testing and isolated ill passengers and crew. The VSP is remotely monitoring the situation, including a review of the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
