The city of Naples is facing a significant outbreak of Hepatitis A, linked to the consumption of raw shellfish. Since January 2026, 65 cases have been reported in the ASL Napoli 1 Centro area, marking a tenfold increase compared to previous years. The outbreak has prompted urgent public health measures. The outbreak has seen a sharp rise in cases, with 3 reported in January, 19 in February, and 43 from March 1 to March 19. The virus, which is transmitted through the orofecal route, has led to regional authorities intensifying control measures across the shellfish supply chain. The focus is on ensuring food safety, enhancing epidemiological surveillance, and informing the public.
The issue was identified following a report by the ASL Napoli 1 Centro, which highlighted the unusual increase in Hepatitis A cases. This prompted the regional health department to propose urgent measures, including a ban on the sale and consumption of raw shellfish in public establishments and recommendations for the public to avoid consuming raw shellfish at home.
