May 5th, 2025:
Public health officials are currently investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Mbandaka infections, with the source traced back to backyard poultry. As of April 24, seven people from six states have reported illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials across several states (UT, SD, MO, IL, WI, DE, and FL) are gathering epidemiologic, traceback, and laboratory data to further investigate the outbreak. The data collected so far indicates that contact with backyard poultry is the primary cause of the illnesses. This outbreak may not be limited to the states listed below. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.
The outbreak was discovered when the CDC's PulseNet system identified a series of illnesses that may be part of this outbreak. PulseNet manages a national database of DNA fingerprints of bacteria causing gastrointestinal illnesses. Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) performed on bacteria from the sick individuals' samples showed that they are closely related genetically, indicating a common source of infection.
Investigators in Ohio collected samples from the inside of boxes used to ship poultry from hatcheries to retail stores. The Salmonella Mbandaka found in these samples was the same strain as the one found in the sick individuals, further confirming the source of the outbreak.
The CDC advises everyone to take precautions when handling backyard poultry. They are working with state partners, hatcheries, and stores that sell poultry to educate owners and control the spread of Salmonella at hatcheries.
