Norovirus Outbreak in Cunard Line Queen Mary 2 Cruise

11 months ago source cdc.gov business

210 Clinton Wharf, 11231 New York, United States

A norovirus outbreak has struck passengers and crew on the Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 cruise ship, affecting 183 out of 2,538 passengers and 14 out of 1,232 crew members during its voyage from March 8 to April 6, 2025. The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on March 18, 2025. Predominant symptoms among those affected include diarrhea and vomiting. The Queen Mary 2 was on voyage number M506 when the outbreak occurred. The percentage of passengers who reported being ill during the voyage was 7.2%, while the percentage of crew who reported being ill was 1.1%.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew reported their symptoms to the medical center onboard. This early detection allowed for immediate steps to be taken to limit the spread of the illness. In response to the outbreak, Cunard Line and the crew aboard the ship increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan. They also collected stool specimens from gastrointestinal illness cases for testing, isolated ill passengers and crew, and consulted with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases. VSP is remotely monitoring the situation, including reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
