United States
A new outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes, an infectious pathogen, has been reported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As of now, 34 people have been confirmed as patients, with the source of the outbreak yet to be identified. The outbreak, which was first posted by the FDA on January 15 (ref# 1285), is currently under active investigation. The agency has initiated a traceback operation but has not yet reported on the specific foods being traced or the locations of the affected patients. The status of the outbreak is ongoing, with the total case count standing at 34.
The discovery of the problem came about through routine monitoring and testing procedures. Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful pathogen that can contaminate food and cause serious, sometimes life-threatening infections. Despite the food not necessarily appearing or smelling spoiled, it can still be a carrier of the infection. Those who have developed symptoms of a Listeria infection are advised to seek medical treatment and inform their doctors about the potential exposure to Listeria.
