Salmonella Outbreak in Gran Canaria Affects 17 Individuals

5 months ago source www3.gobiernodecanarias.org business

Canary Islands, Spain

A salmonella outbreak in Gran Canaria has affected 17 people, with cases reported at the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria and Hospital Juan Carlos I. The outbreak has resulted in gastrointestinal symptoms among the affected individuals, with ten patients having recovered from the infection.

The outbreak has impacted nine patients at the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria and eight at the Hospital Juan Carlos I. Of the affected individuals, three have been discharged from the hospital, while seven have been cleared of the infection but remain hospitalized due to underlying health conditions. The "Dirección General de Salud Pública" and the "Dirección Gerencia del Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular – Materno Infantil" are actively investigating the source of the Salmonella contamination.

The outbreak was identified after the onset of symptoms in patients, prompting the activation of established health protocols. The "Dirección Gerencia", in coordination with the "Dirección General de Salud Pública", has been analyzing food samples and patient specimens. The hospital's kitchen service has immobilized suspected food items to prevent further infections, and the epidemiological investigation is ongoing as authorities await laboratory results.
