Salmonella Outbreak in Two Kindergartens in Rīga linked to Unknown Food Source

1 day ago source eng.lsm.lv

Latvia

A Salmonella outbreak has affected two kindergartens in Rīga, linked to a shared caterer. Over 120 people, including children and adults, have fallen ill, with 10 children hospitalized in serious condition. The outbreak is believed to be caused by a food product, according to Latvian Radio on March 24.

The Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC) is investigating the outbreak, which has impacted the "Sprīdītis" preschool among others. SPKC representative Ilze Ūdre stated that while the investigation is ongoing, initial laboratory tests have identified Salmonella as the primary cause. Other pathogens, such as norovirus and rotavirus, have also been detected. The situation remains under close scrutiny as health officials work to determine the full extent of the outbreak.

The outbreak was first reported on March 19, when the SPKC received information about four cases of acute intestinal infection at the affected preschools. An epidemiological investigation was promptly initiated, and food samples were collected for laboratory analysis. Preliminary results confirmed Salmonella as the main pathogen. In response, the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) suspended the operations of the food service provider SIA "Fristar" on March 20, pending further investigation.
