A salmonella outbreak has affected upwards of 100 members of the Shinnecock Nation, with 57 individuals treated at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital since July 1. The outbreak, linked to a gathering on the Shinnecock Nation territory, has caused severe symptoms, including stomach pain and dehydration, among residents. The outbreak's source remains unconfirmed, but many affected individuals attended a funeral repast on June 30. Symptoms began appearing that evening and the following morning. Health officials have collected food samples from the event for testing. There are also reports of salmonella cases among attendees of the Palm Tree Music Festival on June 27, which was held on the tribe's territory.
The problem was discovered when numerous tribe members sought medical attention for severe symptoms. Hospitalizations and reports of illness prompted an investigation by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. The department is currently gathering information to determine the outbreak's cause and any potential links to other events.
