I went to Disney world on Monday 3/11/24 and had a Turkey leg from Prince Eric’s village stand. It didn’t seem that warm when I ate it. Within 24 hours I was in the hospital on Tuesday 3/12/24 for diarrhea and vomiting, they said I likely got … See More
food poisoning from Turkey legs, it is not uncommon how often they see that. That was part of the questions they asked in the beginning,”did you have a Turkey leg at Disney?” I said yes. They treated me and sent me home with meds.  | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting

days with my son (18 years) at Walt Disney World in Orlando. It was originally planned that we would visit the Magic Kingdom theme park on 25/08 and the Epcot theme park on 26/08 before taking our already booked flight back to Germany on the evening of 27.08. So we spent a lovely day on 25/8 in the really beautiful Magic Kingdom theme park. When we were in the Fantasyland area around 2:30 p.m., my son got a bit hungry and picked up a turkey knuckle (turkey leg) from Prince Eric's Village Market and ate it. When we arrived back at the hotel in the evening, my son complained of slight discomfort in the stomach area. Unfortunately, the bad feeling in the stomach did not improve overnight, so we were unable to notice our visit to the Epcot theme area on 26/08. Since we were still under the assumption at this point in time that it was hopefully just a slight indigestion, we decided to rebook the Epcot theme ticket we had already booked for 26/08 to 27.08 in order to be able to spend it at Walt Disney World at least a few hours before our flight back to Germany, in the hope that my son would get better again. Unfortunately, the situation did not improve over the entire Saturday and so my son vomited for the first time on Sunday morning after a feverish night with sweats and chills, so we had to completely cancel our second day of visiting Walt Disney World. He then vomited several more times over the course of Sunday morning. Due to the fact that my son has been since the age of three Is a type 1 diabetic and has to inject his own insulin, we found out around noon on 26/08 that, due to the fever and obvious problems with the stomach, the insulin delivered was no longer effective. The blood sugar value of the measuring device only showed “HI”. An HI value means that the value is above 400 mg/dl. A normal blood sugar level is between 70 and 120 on an empty stomach. As my son felt worse and weaker physically in the following period and his blood sugar level could no longer be measured, the situation now threatened to become life-threatening, which prompted me as a father to take my son to hospital as quickly as possible at around 1.30 p.m. At around 2:00 p.m., we arrived at the Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) emergency room so that my son could immediately receive intravenous insulin. The measurement of his blood sugar level in hospital showed a value of 650 mg/dl. To bring blood sugar levels back to normal levels, over 1000 insulin units were required (normal daily requirement for an adult is 60-80 units). Since, when asked, my son reported that vomiting always had an aftertaste of the turkey knuckle (Turkey leg) eaten on 25/8 in Walt-Disney-World, it quickly became clear to the treating doctors and nurses that this was food poisoning, which meant that the body, as it was too busy fighting the harmful bacteria, could no longer process the administered insulin. It was only in the following days that my son was able to slowly recover in hospital and regained strength through targeted insulin delivery and a balanced diet. The food in the hospital was first-class and uncomplicated, also thanks to the excellent nurses and doctors. On Wednesday evening, 30/08, we were then able to, in connection with an unplanned hospital stay, 3 additional Hotel nights, 3 additional days for a rental car, rebooking to another return flight, etc., finally start our journey home from Orlando to Germany.
