A salmonella outbreak has been linked to charcuterie meats sold nationwide under various brands, including Aldi, Beretta, Black Bear, Busseto, Culinary Tour, Dietz and Watson, Lidl, Publix, and Salumi Artigianali. As of February 15, 2024, 87 people across 30 states have fallen ill, with 18 hospitalizations reported.... See More The states mentioned in the investigation are AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, ID, IL, IA, KY, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NE, NJ, NY, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, and WI.

The outbreak is currently under active investigation, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) involved. The charcuterie meat products from Fratelli Beretta have been identified as the source of the infections. Since the last update, 40 more illnesses have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from November 20, 2023, to January 20, 2024. No deaths have been reported.

Whole genome sequencing showed it is a different strain of Salmonella from ill people in this outbreak and the Antipasto collected by the Minnesota Department of Health. The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, as many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

The affected batches bear the lot number 240400527 and have a best before date between February 17, 2024, and March 31, 2024 and also the lots with dates between March 14, 2024 and March 31, 2024. The product carries the UPC 3760028500339 and is marked with the health mark FR 42.232.001 CE.

The recall was initiated following an analysis that showed a Listeria monocytogenes count of less than 10 UFC/g. Listeria monocytogenes is the bacterium responsible for causing listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

The products range from chicken burritos, enchiladas with various sauces, bacon-wrapped jalapeno peppers, to chicken elote bowls. These items are noted for having specific lot codes, production dates, and use-by dates, indicating a targeted recall scope. Many of the products were distributed nationwide in the US and others in specific states, check the link below for the details.

FSIS is concerned that some of the affected products may still be in consumers’ or retailers’ refrigerators or freezers.
