United Kingdom
A multicountry outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans linked to sprouted seeds and microgreens has resulted in approximately 50 confirmed cases across Ireland, Finland, and the UK from January to April 2026. The outbreak predominantly affects adult females, with at least five individuals requiring hospitalization. The outbreak has been traced back to sprouted seeds and microgreens, which have been identified as the common source of infection. Health authorities in Ireland, Finland, and the UK are collaborating to manage the situation and prevent further cases. Additionally, five other countries have reported closely related isolates or an increase in this serotype, though no specific food consumption or travel history has been linked to these cases.
The problem was discovered through routine surveillance and monitoring by health authorities, who identified the increase in Salmonella Bovismorbificans cases. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has been actively involved in tracking the outbreak and providing updates to ensure public health safety.
