Food Safety Report: Safeway Fresh Foods Apple and Peanut Butter Snack Trays - recalled due to Salmonella

New Jersey, United States

Safeway Fresh Foods (dba Sunnyside Fresh) of Vineland New Jersey is issuing a voluntary Class 1 Recall of Quick Chek branded Apple and Peanut Butter Snack trays sold in New Jersey because the JIF peanut butter portion has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Quick Chek Apple and Peanut Butter 12/5.1 oz cases were distributed in New Jersey to Quick Chek retail stores.

This recall is being initiated following the Voluntary Recall of Select JIF peanut butter products issued by the JM Smucker Company for products sold in the US for potential Salmonella contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
