Shellfish Sepsis: ICU Stay - Bellagio Buffet in Las Vegas,
10 years ago •reported by user-fbdtk352
in 2012 I came down severely ill one day after having dinner at the buffet in the 5-star Las Vegas hotel, Bellagio. My illness worsened until I became sluggish and weak with a high fever, whereupon my husband took me to the emergency room. There I was diagnosed with sepsis (blood poisoning) due to severe food poisoning. This was a serious LIFE THREATENING condition and I was moved to the ICU. I spent 4 nights in the hospital on strong pain killers for belly cramps and powerful antibiotics, The bacteria making me sick was sampled and typed by the lab as a kind found in mishandled shellfish, and the only shellfish I had eaten in over a month was at the Bellagio buffet. The doctors said I would have been in organ failure by morning if my husband had not gotten a 'bad feeling' and brought me in. I came home from the hospital with a picc line surgically implanted into my chest - it's a specialized IV of sorts used to deliver injected medication right into the heart's for fast dispersion. I also had a daily in-home nurse visit for the next week to inject meds in my picc line and attend to the line's implant site. It took me 30 days to fully recover with the picc line was removed 16 weeks after the onset. I lost 11 pounds along the way. This illness would have killed me within 72 hours of onset if not for aggressive medical intervention, and we paid 1200 in hospital copays when all was said and done. We called and emailed Bellagio about the incident, offering paper proof of the illness and requesting reimbursement for the hospital copays. Bellagio did not return our calls or emails. Do NOT eat at the buffet in that hotel - not just for your comfort, but for the sake of your very life! | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Nausea, Fever, Vomiting, Cramps, Weakness
