Punta Cana, 23000 La Altagracia, Dominican Republic
Two friends recently traveled to Punta Cana Hard Rock Cafe Resort. They were there several days. Suddenly they both had vomiting and later diarrhea, within 30min of each other. They needed IV fluids. They were sent in an ambulance, and this is where everything fell apart. We all know food poisoning happens. But how they were treated was terrible. They do not speak Spanish. They were transferred past the nearest hospital (which takes international insurance) to a hospital 40+ minutes away (which does not). The resort should have, but did not send a representative to serve as a translator for the two. They received adequate care but there was no communication about what was occurring, diagnosis, now what medications they were being given. They were each demanded that they pay for the ambulance ride, doctor assessment/consult fees up front. They felt that if they did not pay they would receive worse care or that something even worse would happen to them. They were afraid for their lives in a foreign country with no one speaking their language. They were told by the resort they could take a cab back. Only upon pressure from relatives did the resort agree to send a vehicle to pick them up. Do not go to this resort. After researching the internet, apparently multiple other individuals and families had the exact same situation. It seems that this is a scam. Perhaps the hospital gives the resort a kickback for the money they receive from foreigners. Not sure. It is absolutely suspicious. For other families, armed guards at the hospital were used in intimidation techniques to get money from the poor travelers. Not so this time, thank God. | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting
