Food Safety Report: Starbucks.

12 years ago reported by user-hpxt9151

Starbucks
Last Thursday night, I had a Cafe Mocha Grande with whipped cream at Starbucks at the Lodge & Evolution in Bellevue, Washington about 830 PM. I have the same drink all the time at your stores. I am fond of it. I have been purchasing them for number of years.

On the long drive from Bellevue to Camano Island where I was staying with my parents for the holidays, the beverage sat uncomfortably in my gut and by the time I got home around 11, diarrhea hit big time. Non- stop- all night. Foul smelling coffee smelling diarrhea- my entire gut was in agony and around 530 I started vomiting- which (inexplicably) I could not do without screaming- though there was not much to vomit but fluid and then dry heaves. This want on all day- vomiting and heaving frequently at the same time- long after I thought there could be anything else in there. Finally late the next day I vomited up something that seemed to have been drawn from my intestines as it look exactly like what was coming out the other end. It was disgusting and foul.

At this point I was emptied out but extremely dehydrated and it took two days before I could consume any food, or drink more than a sip without sensing it was going to come up. I lost much of my voice from stomach acid and the involuntary screaming. It is coming back bit by bit. I basically lost three days of my six day trip. Kind of killed much of the time with my family visit.

I am not writing this because I am pursuing some sort of action or looking for some sort of compensation. There were no flu/cold/other sickness symptoms before or after. I am 99% sure it was the whipped cream- that it was bad. That is the only variable that makes any sense and it just did not set right after I drank it. I have the same beverage all the time and I know what the normal is. This beverage was not right.

I am writing this because Starbucks is a great company and you typically make great products. You are too good for this. You are too good to serve bad whipped cream that had obviously not been refrigerated properly or had been kept after the expire date.

If you need a "why it is important" story to tell your staff, use me. I went through 3 days of hell that could have killed someone who didn't start out so healthy. I am not even exaggerating here. I was very sick. I spent 3 days in bed- someone with a bad heart would not have survived the violent vomiting. It is extremely important that you make sure your whipped cream is within the expire date and is properly refrigerated.

I have two nieces that have worked for Starbucks- they love working for you. I have been a regular customer and I truly believe you are a great company. But this is not Starbucks at its best. At some point I suppose I will have a Cafe Mocha again- but for the foreseeable future the very thought of one makes me feel ill. | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting
