The California Department of Public Health has reported an outbreak of amatoxin poisoning linked to death cap mushrooms, resulting in at least one fatality. A total of 21 cases have been identified in northern California, with severe liver damage reported in several individuals, including children. The outbreak occurred between mid-November and early December, coinciding with the rainy season that fosters the growth of death cap mushrooms near oaks and hardwood trees. These mushrooms are often mistaken for edible varieties due to their similar taste, smell, and appearance. The affected areas are primarily in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay regions, though the risk extends statewide.
The issue was discovered by the California Poison Control System, which noted the clustering of poisoning cases. Health officials have emphasized the dangers of foraging for wild mushrooms, especially during this high-risk season, and have advised the public to refrain from consuming any wild mushrooms unless they have extensive training and experience.
