E. Coli Outbreak at Saskatoon Farms Food Facility

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has identified a gastrointestinal outbreak at the Saskatoon Farms food facility in Foothills County, Alberta. The outbreak, presumed to be caused by E. coli and amoebiasis, has resulted in 18 confirmed cases and affected 235 individuals, with two hospitalizations reported.The outbreak is believed to have originated from the facility's water system. Saskatoon Farms has since disabled the implicated water source and switched to an alternative that has been verified as safe by AHS Environmental Public Health inspections. The E. coli strain identified is Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC), which is not typically found in treated water and is non-toxin-producing. Amoebiasis, caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica, can lead to severe infections, though it often presents without symptoms.
The issue was discovered following multiple onsite inspections by public health officials after reports of illness. Samples from the food preparation areas and water system were collected for laboratory testing.
