Grand County Schools in Utah linked to Norovirus outbreak

Moab, 84532 Utah, United States

An outbreak of norovirus has been confirmed at Grand County Schools by the Southeast Utah Health Department. Spokesperson Brittney Garff said the Utah Public Health Laboratory confirmed the gastrointestinal illness to be norovirus on May 16 via testing of stool sample kits. So far, 35 cases have been reported.

The health department is urging students with symptoms to stay home until their symptoms have ceased for 48 hours. The department is also asking that siblings of students attending Grand County Schools who have similar symptoms to stay home from their schools as well.

Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.

In case you experience vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

Hi, thanks for your comment. According to the CDC “stomach Flu” is one of the common ways to call Norovirus. Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea and it is the leading cause of foodborne illness. You can get norovirus from:

- Having direct contact with an infected person.

- Consuming contaminated food or water.

- Touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your unwashed hands in your mouth.

The most common symptoms of food poisoning are:

Upset stomach
Stomach cramps
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea

Norovirus and other gastro viruses are still a concern for a lot of places now. If people ate two entirely different things but both got sick, its much more likely a virus. Way too many people don't seem aware of how food poisoning differs from gastrointestinal viruses.
