Norovirus outbreak linked to the Wayne Tanaka Elementary School in Las Vegas

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating a Norovirus outbreak linked to the Wayne Tanaka Elementary School in Las Vegas on Jan. 27, 2023. To date, a total of 71 confirmed and probable cases of norovirus are associated with this outbreak. 2 cases were confirmed through laboratory testing, and 69 cases identified through interviews met the criteria to be considered probable cases.

The source of the outbreak has yet to be determined, though the virus is known to spread through direct contact with an infected person, by consuming contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces and then putting unwashed hands in their mouths.

The Health District continues to recommend preventive measures to mitigate the spread of this virus. Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.

In case you experience vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
