####Updated: April, 24, 2024Three of the five people who got sick had testing that matched by whole genome sequencing or WGS (like genetic fingerprinting). This means they most likely got sick from the same source.
Based on information collected, found one common source for all sick people which was a store-made guacamole purchased at PCC Community Markets – West Seattle Co-op on February 10, 2024. Even though this is the most likely source of illness, public health do not know for certain. They did not find out how the guacamole might have been contaminated with STEC and did not have any left to test.
This outbreak appears to be over.

An outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 has been linked to PCC Community Markets – West Seattle Co-op in Seattle, with five reported cases and one hospitalization. The outbreak appears to be over, but the investigation is ongoing.
The outbreak, which occurred between February 14 and February 28, 2024, is associated with store-made guacamole purchased from the co-op on February 10, 2024. All five individuals affected exhibited symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.
Disease Investigators conducted in-depth interviews with the affected individuals and Environmental Health Investigators visited the grocery on March 15, 2024. Laboratory testing confirmed four of the five cases as positive for E. coli O157:H7, with three of these cases genetically matching, indicating a common source of infection.

I haven’t had their quac in a while but a week or two ago I purchased a PCC Branded Blueberry Scone and halfway through kept smelling a sour odor until I realized the scone smelled like sour milk. I didn’t get sick or anything so didn’t report it. This was at WS PCC.
