Great Falls Public Schools (GFPS) in Montana is grappling with a Salmonella outbreak, with ten confirmed cases primarily among elementary school students. The Montana State lab is currently investigating the outbreak, with results expected on November 15th.
At this time, ten cases have been confirmed. The outbreak has affected nine students across four GFPS elementary schools, with three additional test results pending. The Cascade City-County Health Department (CCHD) and the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services (DPHHS) are working closely with GFPS to limit the spread and identify potential sources of contamination. As a precautionary measure, GFPS has temporarily removed fresh fruits and vegetables from all school menus, offering canned and dried alternatives instead.
The Salmonella cases were first identified in Great Falls on October 30th, with six students from Sacajawea and Valley View elementary schools, a staff member, and one unconnected individual confirmed as of November 12th. The CCHD has been in contact with all confirmed individuals and is also investigating potential links to other Salmonella cases in other Montana counties and states.
