Salada de algas marinhas, como outros produtos frescos, pode ser a fonte de intoxicação alimentar. Em 2020, mais de 3.000 estudantes no Japão adoeceram depois de consumir salada de algas marinhas contaminada com E.coli. Os sintomas de uma infecção por E.coli começam de 2 a 7 dias após o consumo e são caracterizados por diarréia e cólicas abdominais.
