“A FDA, juntamente com o CDC e parceiros estaduais e locais, está investigando um surto multiestadual em curso de infecções por Salmonella Stanley, provavelmente ligadas a cogumelos de orelha de madeira importados pela Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc. de Santa Fe Springs, CA. Cogumelos de madeira são um c... ogumelo seco, também comumente rotulado ou referido como Kikurage, Fungo Negro Seco, Fungo Seco, ou Mu'er/Mu Err.
Em 24 de setembro de 2020, um total de 41 pessoas infectadas com a cepa de surto de Salmonella Stanley foram relatadas em 10 estados. Em entrevistas, as pessoas doentes responderam a perguntas sobre os alimentos que comeram e outras exposições na semana anterior ao adoecimento. De acordo com o CDC, de 18 pessoas com informações, 16 (89%) relataram comer ramen em um restaurante na semana anterior ao início da doença. “Do not eat, sell, or serve Wawona-brand bagged peaches sold at ALDI stores in multiple states
The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteriditis infections. State officials from the Minnesota Department of Health reported that ma... ny of the people sick with the same strain of Salmonella Enteritidis, confirmed by Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), had purchased Wawona-brand bagged peaches from ALDI prior to becoming ill.
In response to FDA investigators, ALDI reported to FDA that potentially affected bagged peaches were shipped to CT, IA, IL, KY, MA, MI, MN, ND, NH, NY, OH, RI, SD, VT, WI, and WV. ALDI also reported to FDA that the sole supplier of the bagged peaches to stores reported by cases during the timeframe of interest was Wawona Packing Company, LLC. FDA’s traceback investigation is ongoing to identify the source of this outbreak and to determine if potentially contaminated product has been shipped to additional retailers.

Since the last case update, an additional 244 ill people have been reported in this outbreak, including 15 from 10 new states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, West Virginia. The total now is 640 people infected from 43 states. 85 people have required hospitalization and no deaths haven reported to date.
August 3rd, 2020
The CDC announced that the traceback information collected from the illness clusters identified Thomson International, Inc., of Bakersfield, Calif., as a likely source of red onions. Due to the way onions are grown and harvested, other onion types, such as white, yellow, or sweet yellow, may also be contaminated. Additional traceback is ongoing to determine if other onions are linked to the outbreak.
July 31th, 2020
Since the last update, the number of sick persons an additional 184 ill people have been reported in this outbreak, including 37 from 11 new states: Alaska, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas. A total of 396 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport have been reported from 34 states and 59 have required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.
July 24th, 2020
According to the last update by the CDC, an additional 87 ill people have been reported in this outbreak, including 38 from 8 new states (AZ, FL, ID, ME, ND, NE, SD, and VA) raising the total count to 212 people reported sick from 23 states. 31 people have required hospitalization and no deaths have been reported to date.

The CDC announced that they are currently investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections where 125 people have been reported sick from 15 states (CA, IL, IA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, OH, OR, TN, UT, WA, WI, WY). 24 people of the total have required hospitalization but no deaths have been reported to date.
Early investigations show that the people reported sick in this outbreak are more likely to share a common source of infection but no specific food item, grocery store, or restaurant chain has been identified as the source of infections.
Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 6 hours to 6 days after being exposed to the bacteria and the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and many recovers without treatment.

CDC announced that since the last update, a total of 46 additional people have laboratory-confirmed Cyclospora infections. The total of reported people for this outbreak increased to 122 from seven states (nine new cases from Wisconsin).

The CDC and the FDA are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to bagged salad mix products at ALDI, Hy-Vee, and Jewel-Osco stores. To date, 76 persons have been reported sick on six states (IA, IL, KS, MO, MN, NE) where 16 people have required hospitalization and no deaths have been reported.
CDC is advising consumers not to eat salads or products containing any of the following products:
- ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad. Sold in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Minnesota
- Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad. Sold in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, and Nebraska
- Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Garden Salad. Sold in Illinois

“The FDA has shared best practice guidelines for restaurants, delivery services, grocery stores, and other retail food businesses to keep their employees and customers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The FDA guidelines address 4 specific areas:
1) *Monitor Employee Health* - Management must i... nstruct employees to speak up about possible COVID-19 symptoms or exposure and implement workplace controls to screen and reduce possible transmission. Workplace controls can include: Pre-screening employees for high temperatures, increase disinfecting and cleaning of workspaces and equipment, wearing face mask and gloves, and practicing social distancing of at least 6 ft when possible.
2) *Emphasize Personal Hygiene for Employees* - When working, employees must wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Employees should also avoid touching exposed food or surfaces with their bare hands and need to always wear gloves.
3) *Follow and enhance Food Safety Protocols* - Food establishments must follow established food safety protocols and increase safety measures to help customers maintain good infection protocols including encouraging spacing in lines, discontinuing salad bars and buffets, and discouraging bringing pets into stores.
4) *Manage Food Pick-Up and Delivery* - For food, pick-up establishments need to create protocols to allow customers to maintain social distancing and maintain food safety standards. For delivery, no-contact delivery should be enacted to maintain proper social distancing.

CDC announced that since the last update, a total of 25 additional people have reported infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O103 from two states. The total of reported people for this outbreak rose to 39 from six states (one new case from Florida).

CDC announced they are currently investigating an E. coli O103 outbreak linked to clover sprouts served at Jimmy John's restaurants. To date, 14 people have been reported sick with E. coli O103 from five states (IL, IA, MO, TX, UT). None of these persons have required hospitalization and no deaths have been reported.
CDC advises consumers that may have a leftover meal with clover sprouts from a Jimmy John’s restaurant, to throw it away and don't eat it. According to the outbreak notice, Jimmy John’s stopped serving clover sprouts on Feb 24th, 2020 on all of their locations.

“The FDA alongside the CDC issued a warning letter to Jimmy John’s over the several outbreaks linked to this restaurant chain. They state that Jimmy John’s developed a pattern to receive and sell adulterated fresh produce, specifically clover sprouts and cucumbers.
Jimmy John’s have been involved... in the following outbreaks in recent years:
- 2019. E. coli O103 (STEC). 22 persons sick.
- 2018. Salmonella Montevideo. 10 people sick.
- 2014. E. coli O102 (STEC). 19 persons sick.
- 2013. E. coli O157:H7 (STEC). 8 people sick.
- 2012. E. coli O26. 29 persons sick.
- 2010. Salmonella. 7 people sick.
- 2010. Salmonella. 140 persons sick.
- 2010. Salmonella Saintpaul. 256 people sick.
- 2008. E. coli O157: NM(H). 28 persons sick.
These outbreaks indicate that the corporate mechanisms to control their suppliers are inadequate, according to the FDA, which is why they now require that Jimmy John’s submit the full description on how they will prevent the reception and selling of adulterated food, especially sprouts, on all of their locations.
Although the letter recognizes previous actions taken by the company on this matter, in light of the continuous outbreaks the FDA demands a response within 15 days addressing the issues previously mentioned.

“There is some confusion surrounding the current Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak that began in December 2019 and whether you can get it through food. Here is some information:
Mar 23 UPDATE: The CDC has released a newsletter titled "Food Safety and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)" sta... ting that while it is possible for a person to get the Covid-19 through touching contaminated surfaces and then touching their own face, it is not the main form of transmission. The CDC states, with low survivability of coronavirus on surfaces food product and packaging present a very low risk of infection.
Mar 16 UPDATE: In the United States the CDC has recommended against holding any event or group gatherings of 50 or more people for the next 8 weeks. This had led many cities and states to temporarily ban dine-in restaurants and bars but delivery and take out options are still available. Covid-19 is thought to be spread primarily through human contact so delivery services and restaurants have setup contactless delivery options to minimize human contact. There does seem to be some evidence of the potential for transmission of the virus through fecal matter so it is super important that restaurants continue to follow strict sanitary guidelines such as having workers thoroughly wash their hands after using the bathroom and before preparing and delivering food.
Feb 26 UPDATE: The Chinese CDC is investigating the possibility that the virus can be spread through fecal matter that could possibly contaminate food and water. The Chinese CDC has found live viruses in stool samples of Covid-19 patients and can be a partial explanation for the rapid spread of the disease. The agency is recommending strengthening sanitation and hygiene measures.
What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found in both animals and humans. Past outbreaks include Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The current novel(a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans) Coronavirus strain called 2019-nCoV is thought to originate in live food markets in Wuhan, China through animals and human contact.
How is it transmitted?
Coronaviruses strains are usually transmitted through the respiratory system, so it is typically thought of as a low risk of infection from contaminated food. Restaurants can be a site of transmission of coronavirus because of the large numbers of people congregating in close quarters and then coughing/sneezing could spread the disease just like in other places (transportation, schools, etc). But the food itself normally isn’t a likely vehicle.
The current Coronavirus strains 2019-nCoV has been found in stool samples of COVID-19 patients by the Chinese CDC which means that the current outbreak might be transmitted from multiple routes not just through the respiratory system as usual.
Signs of infection?
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases and those with weakened immune systems, an infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

World Health Organization (WHO) recommends standard measures to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth+nose when coughing/sneezing, and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. Additional recommendations from the Chinese CDC include strengthening health publicity and education; maintaining environmental health and personal hygiene; drinking boiled water, avoiding raw food consumption, and implementing separate meal systems in epidemic areas; frequently washing hands and disinfecting of surfaces of objects in households, toilets, public places, and transportation vehicles; and disinfecting the excreta and environment of patients in medical facilities to prevent water and food contamination from patients’ stool samples.

“FDA has announced that recalls of yellowfin/ahi tuna supplied by Truong Phu Xanh Co., LTD of Vietnam have not effectively removed potentially harmful products from the market and be contaminated by Scombroid. Scombrotoxin fish poisoning can occur when fish is not properly chilled or preserved and be... gins to spoil, resulting in increased histamine levels. Histamine cannot be destroyed by freezing or cooking.
Tuna from this supplier is still within its shelf life and could have been sold thawed or frozen ground tuna meat, poke cubes, steaks, or loins. The following companies imported tuna from Truong Phu Xanh Co., LTD:

- Northern Fisheries LTD. (Little Compton, RI)
- Alfa International Seafood Inc. (Medley, FL)

“iwaspoisoned.com helped the community of Ames, IA improve their food safety. Customers began reporting El Azteca's Stange Road location on Dec 12th. That information was passed to the Iowa Department of Health which followed up with a complaint investigation by the Iowa Department of Inspections and... Appeals at the location on Dec 17th. They found 10 separate violations including foods not being properly heated, a buildup of black substance was observed in ice machine, liquid influenza medication being stored above a food serving area and a lack of proper employee training on food safety.
The restaurant was closed Wednesday, Dec 18th as crews cleaned and sanitized surfaces inside, but it reopened Thursday.
As of today, we have collected 134 reports citing 223 people sick and continue to receive reports and pass them to the Iowa Department of Health. Reporting food poisoning on iwaspoisoned.com has helped stop others in Ames, IA from getting sick. This success in helping protect communities shows how much reporting matters.
