Wake County Public Health and Wake County Environmental Services are investigating a Norovirus outbreak linked to the Sushi Nine restaurant located at 3812 Western Blvd, Raleigh, NC. To date, 3 cases of the virus have been confirmed and all of them are now recovering. The source is … See More
not yet identified, it appears that those who reported falling ill consumed an array of menu items, making it impossible to determine a single point of contamination – a common characteristic of norovirus outbreaks.

The first report of illness connected to the restaurant came on Dec. 1, launching an immediate investigation. Subsequent reports to Wake County’s Public Health Communicable Disease team brought the total number of related complaints to 241, all from patrons who visited the restaurant between Nov. 28 and Dec. 5. Stool samples, the sole definitive test for norovirus, were requested of each complainant; only 3 sets of results have returned so far, all positive for the virus.

Sushi Nine voluntarily closed for deep cleaning on Dec. 5. An environmental health consultant has since inspected the establishment daily and confirmed no new complaints since the restaurant reopened on Dec. 8.

Wake County strongly advises anyone who visited Sushi Nine within the Nov. 28 to Dec. 5 timeframe to monitor their health closely. While norovirus is highly infectious and presents symptoms rapidly after exposure, it is usually self-limiting within several days.

In case you experience Norovirus symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care

December 09, 2023

Wake County Environmental Services is investigating a foodborne illnesses outbreak linked to Sushi Nine restaurant located at 3812 Western Blvd, Raleigh, NC. To date, 140 cases have been reported. The restaurant voluntarily shut down for 48 hours to conduct thorough deep cleaning, after which it was given clearance by the county to reopen and resume operations.

The first case of foodborne illness was reported on November 30, with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Wake County Environmental Services are looking into the possibility that these symptoms could be indicative of the norovirus, though it is still too early to confirm the exact cause of the illness. The analysis includes close inspection of food storage and preparation methods at Sushi Nine. The initial complaints about the establishment were lodged on December 1, resulting in further complaints in the days following the incident that led to the recommendation for the restaurant's temporary closure.

While measures have been taken to address the issue, it is urged that anyone who ate at Sushi Nine between November 30th through December 4th and experienced subsequent sickness should report to the local health authority.

If you are experiencing symptoms after eating this product it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist seek medical attention.
