Green Stool After Cereal - Cheerios, Frederick Maryland

3 years ago reported by user-yvwp6262 business

Honey Nut Cheerios, Giant Food, 5316 New Design Rd, Frederick, MD 21701, United States

5316 New Design Road, Frederick, 21701 Maryland, United States

Bought a "large size" box of Honey Nut Cheerios there a few days ago. Had a few handfuls of dry cereal before bed on July 3 and ended up with some of the most foul diarrhea I had ever seen. I assumed it was PMS because why would I get sick from Cheerios? Did the same thing the next night and got sick again. At this point it was clear this did not have natural origins, I assume there was some kind of ingredient change. It was completely liquid with bubbles and a light green tint. I eat the same thing every day so it was easy to rule out other factors. Very dehydrated today.

07/06 update: I feel great today after being sick two days in a row. Definitely the cheerios. I also remembered I did get diarrhea sometime mid last month, I bought one of those variety packs with tiny cereal boxes (no Lucky Charms). I assumed it was from a cereal high in sugar and dyes but there was a box of Honey Nut Cheerios in there so it appears to be affecting multiple batches (same store). I’ve saved the large cereal box and a sample of the tainted food if anyone is interested (I hope to be able to file a fda report today). Something that might be of interest. I am particularly vulnerable to dehydration because I am on lithium, and this was a highly unusual form of dehydration. (I’ m accustomed to managing dehydration from bowel issues when I’m on my period, this was different). The primary issues were lightheadedness and making dumb mistakes. But on day two the dehydration was so bad I had to skip work. I don’t have any food allergies.

My best guess after researching was that they added carrageenan with the green coming from bile - the bubbles seemed to fit with perhaps an emulsifier? From what I’ve read it can basically suck then moisture in your body into your intestines, which fits that all my symptoms were dehydration related. I drink an obscene amount of water because of my meds, probably why it wasn’t as serious as others. | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Dehydration, Green Stool
