The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that Vanee Foods, based in Broadview, Illinois, is recalling approximately 9,564 pounds of its chicken flavored base product. The recall is due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, specifically soy and wheat, which are not declared... See More on the product label. These items were distributed to Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

The product in question is a 1-lb. plastic tub labeled as "Sysco Classic Chicken Flavored Base" with lot code 02673. It was produced on July 26, 2023, and packed in cases labeled as "Sysco Classic BEEF BASE CF" with the same lot code. The product does not bear a USDA mark of inspection but is packed in cases that bear establishment number "EST. 19339" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The issue was discovered when Vanee Foods notified the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) that they had shipped beef base product that may be incorrectly labeled as chicken flavored base.

The color of the product also appeared to be dark orange, almost brown -- I have not had mandarin fruit cups before so I was unaware of the unusual appearance initially. All of the mandarin cups seemed to look this way. Next morning, noticed stomach upset which was mild, but then around 3pm MST started getting liquid diarrhea and bad stomach cramps and nausea. A salmonella outbreak has been linked to charcuterie meats sold nationwide under various brands, including Aldi, Beretta, Black Bear, Busseto, Culinary Tour, Dietz and Watson, Lidl, Publix, and Salumi Artigianali. As of February 15, 2024, 87 people across 30 states have fallen ill, with 18 hospitalizations reported.... See More The states mentioned in the investigation are AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, ID, IL, IA, KY, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NE, NJ, NY, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, and WI.

The outbreak is currently under active investigation, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) involved. The charcuterie meat products from Fratelli Beretta have been identified as the source of the infections. Since the last update, 40 more illnesses have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from November 20, 2023, to January 20, 2024. No deaths have been reported.

Whole genome sequencing showed it is a different strain of Salmonella from ill people in this outbreak and the Antipasto collected by the Minnesota Department of Health. The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, as many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

The outbreak, affecting 6.58% of passengers and 1.55% of crew members, has prompted an investigation into Queen Victoria's voyage number V404. The total number of people affected stands at 120 out of 1,824 passengers and 15 out of 967 crew members. It's important to note that these figures represent the total cases for the entire voyage and do not indicate the number of active cases at any given port of call or at disembarkation.

The issue came to light when the Cunard Cruise Line and the crew aboard the ship increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as part of the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan. Ill passengers and crew were isolated, and the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) is remotely monitoring the situation, including reviewing the ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

As the investigation continues, passengers and crew members are advised to remain vigilant about their health.
